    transparent gradients in illustrator

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 19, 2006, 3:27 PM
Mood: Dead i need some vacation

    hello people...
i've been so busy and tired lately...
i'm not even having time to reply the comments... sorry for that. i'll do it as soon as i can...
hope to have some time to work in something new soon...

    ---
    and hey,
i've been asked some times if corelDraw has some tool which makes transparent gradients, like gradients from one color to transparent... yes, it has... and that was, for me, the main advantage comparing it with illustrator...

i said it was, because when browsing the digital art (vector) forum, i found this thread [link] which has some interesting tip from ~igorshmigor quoting this tutorial [link] ...

it's possible achieve the same result with illustrator and it's pretty easy too...
and as the tutorial is kinda complicated, i've made a little one simplifying the steps...
    hope it could be useful...

    transparent gradients
    ---

    see you friends.

Yeah transparency masks are okay in illustrator they do the trick but it's twice as much work than if they just had a fade to transparent option :-) I have to admit, I'm a little jealous of CorelDraw now! :-) Thanks for answering!

Another trick I do in illustrator is set the gradient object to a multiply blending mode for shading then one side of the gradient is set to white and the other to the color of my choice. While it's not exactly the same effect it can be useful. Using the screen mode can sometimes work with highlights but it doesn't seem to work as well.

Can't wait to see some new work from you!

    glad you liked bro.
i knew that it should be possible to do with illustrator the same i do with corelDraw...
it's not that simple like in corel, it's not the same tool, but it's still an easy way to make complex gradients with illustrator...

Yeah, you can get more complex gradients trough this method. It's easier if you have done some work in photoshop first. 'Cause this technic is the same one from the photoshop opacity mask. You just have to keep in mind that the whites in the mask are the areas that you can see, so the blacks are the areas left transparent. Quick formula.

yes Paul, i've to agree with you =)

even being relatively easy, using transparency masks demands much more work than using the "transparency interactive tool" in corelDraw... you've to draw the shapes twice, always... but the result produced is exactly the same.

i've tried the other trick you told here... it works well depending on the situations you want... for example, if you want a gradient from yellow to transparent over some blue background, you'll be disappointed =)... but for some other situations it is, yes, useful.

sorry for the late answer... my job is killing me lately....
i saw your comment at VP (btw, thanks a lot for what you said about "adrianaLima"... it really means a lot for me).

can't wait to see more from you too (btw, the Keira Knightley work is incredibly good so far)!

    =)

hehe I was having the same problem with my transition to Illustrator, only after 5 months working with it I found a tutorial to teach the transparent gradient >_< the good with Corel is that is much easier to learn its features than with Illustrator...

But I'm steaking with illustrator (I love working with InDesign, so it's best to stay with the adobe family =P), only problem is that I wish there was a way to make the anchor points bigger, so I don't missclick than so much... :/

I really need to update my gallery :/ But if you wanna visit it anyway and leave a comment (or suggestions for a new work), I won't complain! :D
